Sony MDR-V150 Headphones Review

This series of headphones is available at at most stores for the paltry price of $16.99. Many a person is tempted to grab the headphones from the shelves, but are these relatively inexpensive over the ear headphones worth the small price that you will pay for them? Find out after the picture.

Hardware

The majority of the headphones are made out of plastic, with the exception if the ear-cups. The material feels slightly cheaper than some other over the ear headphones, but I have had no significant qualms with the build quality. The headset is easy to adjust, and the ear-cups swivel to accommodate different ear positions. A letter R and an L indicate which ear goes in which side, and it really makes a difference which side goes where (sound quality wise). The top of the headphones is still made out of plastic, but it is a grayish color as opposed to black. The plastic is comfortable enough, and it doesn't really matter that there isn't any padding for your head. One small issue is with the cord, as it is around six feet long and not very portable. The headphones come with an attachment that goes at the end of the cord. The attachment allows you to plug it into a stereo, if you happen to carry one of those around.

Sound Quality.

In a word, if you have been listening to music on an iPod's headphones, the sound quality is excellent. The quality may not be as good as some more expensive headphones, but $16.99 is a bargain. The bass is deep (one listener told me it was almost too deep), and sounds were clear. The music player I was using had a variety of sound settings I was able to fiddle with, and the MDR-V150 handled them like a champ. Unfortunately, it doesn't block out very much ambient noise (about half) but once you turn up the volume it doesn't really matter.

This may be the best pair of low cost over the ear headphones on the market today. Sony did a great job with sound quality and comfort, but it lags behind some higher cost headsets in design and noise canceling. If those two matter to you above all else, don't buy it, but for anyone looking for a good pair of headphones on a budget, The Sony MDR-V150 is your pair.
