Though not an unexpected feature, the software buttons on Android 4.0 raise the important question of what the function of the current hardware buttons on phones will be used for when phones running gingerbread are updated. Gizmodo did a bit of digging and a contacted Google.
This is what the Rep had to say " ICS does have onscreen buttons but not always. If there's a device with hardware buttons the onscreen buttons won't be there, and the hardware buttons will act and function as you'd expect them to.... back and home will function as you'd expect, the search button will query the search bar (as you'd expect), and the menu button will query the menu overflow in the action bar"
So, thankfully, Android devices with hard keys will not have dead, useless buttons sitting at the bottom of the phone.
