The iPhone

Tomorrow, a new iPhone will be announced.

And tomorrow, thousands will wait to be enthralled by the kind of magic once possessed only by wizards in fairy tales.

The drill is the same each year.

Slightly thinner.

A bit faster.

And maybe a couple new features that the company Jobs built took and repackaged from others.

Then why are we still continually enthralled by every word that comes from the mouth that is Apple?

I believe it has much to do with our human need for some security.

In these turbulent times, there isn't much one can depend on. In some twisted way, a piece of technology, a tool, has insinuated itself deep into our need, our desire, for something constant and unchanging.

Apple is a company you can depend on.

Its products just work. Though they may not be the most customizable, or the fastest, every product that leaves Cupertino is a tool that every user can rely on. Unlike many other phones, when it is broken, the course of action to fixing it is clear; one must venture to the Apple store.

And usually within minutes, that iPhone is back to new.

Every year, a member of the Company ventures out onto stage to announce the new product.

Every year, constant and unchanging.

I started the article off with the intention of berating others for their illogical love of a product. But I realize that I am ending it with a thank you, because I , as much as anyone who will buy that iPhone, appreciate the bit of security that something as small as a product launch can present.

So even though I may berate those who end up purchasing it.

I understand where they are coming from.

So a thank you to Apple for being a very small constant in a very turbulent world.
